Created by Kevin 15 years ago
My Mother was born Edna Duthie at 17 Young Street, Aberdeen on 18th July 1933 at 08.25am. By all accounts She had a happy childhood growing up in Woodside and Northfield. She attented St Peter's RC School and Powis Academy. As was the norm in those days, She left School at the age of 14, starting work at Stoneywood Papermill as an Over-Hauler, which involved inspecting the large sheets of paper, before they were packed and shipped. In 1952 whilst out dancing with her friends at the Beach Ballroom, Aberdeen, She met a young Lad by the name of John Lindsay (John admitted that he followed Edna and her friends to the Argosy, Aberdeen, that night) and the rest, as they say is history. Edna and John got married on the 25th September 1954 at Northfield Parish Church, and spent the First, two and a half years in a small flat in Charlotte Street, Aberdeen. It was during this time that their 1st child and Daughter also called Edna was born. In 1957 the family moved to 5 Cloghill Place,Mastrick, Aberdeen, where my Mother lived for the remainder of her life. Edna continued working at Stoneywood Paper Mills, until Her Daughter Edna started school in 1960. on the 31st January 1962, Edna's Second child and Son Kevin was born. Thereafter Edna worked part-time at RS McColl in Mastrick, to fit in with School hours. Once Edna's children were slightly older, Edna went back to working full-time. Initially She worked at Strathdee the Baker's in Rose Street, Aberdeen, and when Strathdee's opened a new shop in Rousay Drive, Aberdeen She moved to work there. In about 1972 Edna started work as a Domestic Assistant in Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen and worked there for 23 years, the latter Three years Edna worked there as a Patient Movement Portress, until finally retiring at the age of 62. Edna had quite a few interests and pastimes, including Knitting, Reading and Walking, Socially Edna enjoyed Bingo at the Mecca and Gala Bingo Club's, and at the Boilermakers Social Club, Aberdeen, with friends Dorothy, Yvonne and Marion. In addition to being a loving Mum to Edna and Kevin, Edna was also a proud and doting Grandmother to her Three Grandsons Paul, Greg and Ross (in 1975 Edna won a "Glamorous Granny" competition, whilst on holiday in Majorca). Edna was also a very proud Great-Grandmother (or "Cabby" as She was affectionately called)to Her Four beautiful Great-Granddaughters Keirah, Aria, Kendra and Abby and to Step-Grandson Dean. Great-Granddaughter Keirah wrote this for Edna (Cabby) which was read out at Edna's funeral.... Dear Cabby, I know you are up in Heaven, and I know you are looking down. I know that you are sitting up there on your sparkly diamond cloud. I loved trying on your shoes, but then you had to try on mine, I remember you making me cheesy crackers, that you always said were fine. I'm sorry I could'nt come, but I'm too young, and would have cried, I know for sure that just for you, there is not a single dry eye. I liked writing this letter, for my No1 Great Grandma, and I only wish you were here to hear it. I miss you loads, from Keirah xx Every year Edna and John (almost without fail) enjoyed their holidays away. When their Kids were little, they holidayed in Fife with John's relatives. Their First holiday abroad was to the Costa Brava in 1969. For 20 years they enjoyed holidayed in Majorca, but had also been to Yugoslavia and Germany. Amongst other interests and pastimes Edna had, was shopping, watching Her favourite "Soap Operas" on TV and listening to music, including Country Western, Queen and Rod Stewart. Edna also enjoyed very much (and was probably at her happiest) when She had Her family around Her at Family gatherings such as Parties, Special occasions, picnics and BBQ's etc. Edna was a very much loved person by Family, Friends and acquaintances, and had many Friends throughout Her life. Edna had started to feel unwell in the early part of 2008, and was eventually diagnosed with Small Cell Cancer in July 2008. She bore Her ilness with great courage and dignity and never complained. She tragically passed away on the 19th October 2008. Edna was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister and Aunt. She will never be forgotten, and will forvever be loved, and hold a special place in our hearts. xxxxxx John, Edna and Kevin
